After the high of Corcovado, we made our way inland to a small mountain village called San Gerardo. In order to get there from Drake's Bay we had to take the speedboat back across the sea and up the river to Sierpe, then a bus to Palmar Norte and then changed to a different bus twice to get to San Gerardo. The whole trip took about 10 hours. The purpose for going here was to hike in the cloud forests in the hope of maybe getting a glimpse of the rare Resplendant Quetzal.
Après la magnifique expérience de Corcovado, nous nous sommes dirigés dans l'intérieur des terres vers un petit village de montagne appelé San Gerardo. Pour y arriver depuis Drake's Bay, nous avons dû prendre le bateau pour traverser la mer et remonter la rivière jusqu'à Sierpe, puis un bus pour Palmar Norte et ensuite changer de bus deux fois pour arriver à San Gerardo. La totalité du voyage prend environ 10 heures. Le but de cette visite était de faire de la randonnée dans la forêt tropicale humide avec l'espoir d'apercevoir le très rare Quetzal resplendissant.

Upon arrival to San Gerardo, we didn't have anywhere booked to stay. We do this quite a bit because sometimes the local transport isn't exactly reliable so you never know if you are going to make it to your destination in the allotted time or not. We had researched a few places before so knew roughly where we wanted to go but when we got there we realised there it was mostly steep hills so we didn't want to hike up a 45 degree gradient with our backpacks for 2 hours to get to our prefered hostel!
So we found a place called Roca Dura. A strange type of a place loosely themed on Rock Music. It was built into the side of a steep mountain, was made of stone, it smelt a wee bit of damp and had probably a higher than average count of spider's webs about the place but it did the job rightly!
We ate there for dinner which was pretty poor - it gave me a bit of a dodgy stomach and Elodie found a fly in her pasta so didn't eat any more after that!
Then for breakfast the next morning they had ran out of gas so didn't have anything except a cup of coffee haha!
En arrivant à San Gerardo, nous n'avions réservé nulle part où dormir. Nous avons fait cela quelque fois car les transports locaux n'étant pas toujours fiables, nous ne savions jamais si nous allions ou non arriver dans les temps à destination. Nous avions cependant listé quelques endroits auparavant, donc nous savions à peu près où nous voulions aller mais quand nous sommes arrivés, nous nous sommes rendu compte que la route était très escarpée, et nous ne voulions pas monter une pente de 45 degrés avec nos sacs à dos pendant 2 heures pour atteindre notre auberge préférée!Nous avons donc trouvé un endroit appelé Roca Dura. Un lieu étrange autour du thème de la Rock Music (enfin on pense). Il a été construit sur le flanc escarpé de la montagne et est fait en pierre; il sentait un peu l'humidité et avait probablement un nombre de toiles d'araignées plus élevé que la moyenne, mais ça a fait l'affaire!Nous avons mangé là pour le dîner qui était assez médiocre - cela m'a donné un peu mal à l'estomac et Elodie a trouvé une mouche dans ses pâtes, donc n'a rien pu mangé après cela!Pour le petit déjeuner le lendemain matin, il n'y avait plus de gaz donc nous n'avons rien eu à part une tasse de café haha!

The next day we headed for the cloud forest trail. The trail was free but welcomed donations at the start to which we duly obliged. We met a Dutch guy at the entrance who was working there as part of his university degree studying the impact of replanted secondary forest on the soil. Interesting.
The trail took about 3 hours and had some lovely vistas of the valley and waterfalls. We saw a bit of birdlife but unfortunately no Quetzals! The cloud forest is called so because of the high amount of cloud cover. This makes it feel like it is constantly drizzling and the trees have a lot of moss growing on them. Except if you plan to do the hard 3 days trek to the highest peak of Costa Rica, there wasn't much else to do in San Gerardo so we blew town the next day. So this place is more for good and motivate mountain trekkers!
Le lendemain, nous avons suivi le sentier du parc "The Cloud Forest". L'entrée est gratuite mais ils acceptent les dons auxquels nous avons contribué. Nous avons rencontré un Néerlandais à l'entrée qui travaillait là-bas dans le cadre de son diplôme universitaire pour étudier l'impact et l'évolution de la reforestation sur le sol: intéressant.
Le trail dure environ 3 heures et possède de belles vues sur la vallée et les cascades. Nous avons vu quelques oiseaux mais malheureusement toujours pas de Quetzal!
"The cloud forest" (ou forêt nuageuse) est appelée ainsi en raison de l'importante couverture nuageuse qui recouvre la zone tout au long de l'année. Cela donne l'impression qu'il bruine constamment et que les arbres sont mousseux.
Sauf si vous envisagez de faire le difficile trek de 3 jours jusqu'au plus haut sommet du Costa Rica, il n'y avait pas grand-chose de plus à faire à San Gerardo, donc nous sommes repartis le lendemain. Donc, cet endroit est plus pour les trekkeurs motivés et d'un très bon niveau.
