66/ Peru - Cusco: Sacred Valley (Part 1)

Arrivée à la nuit à Cuzco: 3ème ville du pays avec environ 550000 habitants et toujours 3300m d’altitude. Direction l’hôtel et on verra demain…
Notre hôtel étant à 50m de la Plaza de Armas, nous avons le plaisir de découvrir un superbe endroit, point central de la ville. Grandes cathédrales, immenses parois, jets d’eau, balcons couleur ocre, rouge,… Les espagnols n’ont pas fait que du bien mais là c’est géant.
Arrival at night in Cuzco: 3rd city of the country with about 550,000 inhabitants and as always, 3300m of altitude. Head straight to the hotel and we will see tomorrow ...
Our hotel is 50m from the Plaza de Armas, we are pleased to discover a beautiful place, central point of the city. Large cathedrals, huge walls, water jets, balconies ocher red, ... The Spaniards did not do much good hère in past times but there is still influence.
 
Avec nos escapades extérieures nous allons y passer 5 nuits, ce qui nous permettra de bien connaître cet endroit. Nous avons pris un « boleto » qui nous ouvre l’accès à 14 sites et musées pour 130 Soles, plus ceux que nous nous offrirons.
Bien sûr le graal c’est la visite du Machu Picchu qui est à environ 160kms. On peut le faire direct en train mais c’est très cher, nous avons donc pris l’option taxi + train (une partie ne peut se faire qu’en train et ça coûte un bras: 55USD pour la prestation).
With our outdoor escapades we will spend 5 nights there, which will allow us to know this place well. We took a touristo "boleto" which opens us access to 14 sites and museums for 130 Soles.
Of course the holy grail is the visit of Machu Picchu which is about 160kms away. It can be done directly by train but it is very expensive, so we took the option taxi through the Sacred Valley + train (part can only be done by train and it costs an arm: 55USD for the service).

C’est notre désormais ami Ricardo et sa Toyota qui nous ont embarqués pour un premier arrêt aux ruines de Chinchero.
Très joli endroit, bien mis en valeur avec un panorama splendide, le tout surplombé par une église espagnole de toute beauté.
It is our driver but now our friend Ricardo and his Toyota who took us and the first stop was at the ruins of Chinchero.
Very nice place, well highlighted with a splendid panorama, all overlooked by a Spanish church of great beauty.

Sur la route Ricardo nous arrêtera dans une fabrique artisanale de laine de lamas et d’alpacas. Très intéressant surtout pour les teintures toutes tirées de matières locales et naturelles. Nous laisserons un tip mais n’achèterons rien au grand désespoir de nos hôtes.
On the road with Ricardo we stop in a factory of lamas wool and alpacas. Very interesting especially for dyes all drawn from local and natural materials. We will leave a tip but will not buy anything to the despair of our hosts.

J’oubliais, sur le chemin Ricardo nous raconte les légendes du coin et nous explique les petites statuettes de taureaux posées sur le faîtage des maisons qui marquent l’aboutissement des travaux.
I forgot, on the way Ricardo tells us the legends of the corner and explains the small statuettes of bulls placed on the ridge of the houses which mark the completion of the works.

Deuxième arrêt Moray: terrasses concentriques creusées dans la montagne pour pouvoir faire des essais de cultures en fonction de l’altitude. Ce site est en parfait état ou presque, et sous le soleil absolument superbe à voir.
Second stop Moray: concentric terraces dug in the mountain to be able to test crops according to the altitude. This site is in perfect condition or almost, and under the sun absolutely beautiful to see.

Ensuite, visite des salines de Las Salineras. Première pause pour une vue d’en haut et ensuite visite du site (non comprise dans le Boleto).
Ces salines sont le résultat d’un phénomène géologique naturel. Un ruisseau sort de la montagne après avoir parcouru une longue distance dans une couche de sel gemme datant d’avant la formation de la Cordillère des Andes quand tout ça était sous l’eau.
Cette source sortant en altitude est captée et redistribuée sur des terrasses découpées en petits bassins (10 à 30 m2) peu profonds et exposés au soleil pour l’évaporation.
Dans un premier temps la couleur est ocre rosé puis devient blanche, le sel est alors extrait et remonté vers un grand local où il est mis en sacs et expédié. On remet ensuite de l’eau et on recommence. Then we visited the salines of Las Salineras. First break for a view from above and then visit the site (not included in the Boleto).
These saltworks are the result of a natural geological phenomenon. A stream comes out of the mountain after having traveled a long distance in a layer of rock salt dating from before the formation of the Andean Cordillera when all this was under water.
This source emerging at altitude is captured and redistributed on terraces cut into small basins (10 to 30 m2) shallow and exposed to the sun for evaporation.
At first the color is ocher pink then becomes white, the salt is then extracted and reassembled in a large local factory where it is packed and shipped. They then put water back and start again.

L’aspect de cet ensemble est surréaliste et on se demande ce que ça fait ici. En tout cas, à voir absolument car ça n’existe qu’ici avec un tel cadre autour. Frissons garantis.
The appearance of this setting is surreal and one wonders what it is doing here. In any case, a must see absolutely because it exists only here with such amazing surroundings. Guaranteed chills.

Petit changement de batterie après le déjeuner, heureusement Ricardo a des amis mécanos partout et toujours prêts à lui rendre service. 
Little change of battery after lunch, fortunately Ricardo has mechanic friends everywhere and always ready to help him.

Après un bon resto, Ricardo nous emmène à Ollantaytambo où nous passerons la nuit pour ensuite prendre le train pour Agua Caliente.
Juste avant d’arriver, Ricardo nous fait remarquer le long d’une paroi des capsules accrochées où des amateurs de sensations fortes peuvent aller dormir après une escalade pas à la portée du premier venu. Merci par pour nous!
After a good restaurant, Ricardo takes us to Ollantaytambo where we spend the night and take the train the next day to Aguas Caliente.
Just before arriving, Ricardo points out above the road is a wall of capsules hung where thrill seekers can go to sleep after climbing. No thanks for us!

Dans ce petit village aux rues pavées d’époque Incas, coulent multitudes de petits ruisseaux descendants de la montagne et passant sous les maisons. Une forteresse Incas bien conservée se dresse face à la Plaza de Armas. Petite ville authentique où on pourrait presque rencontrer un Inca avant l’arrivée des Espagnols. D’ailleurs nous en avons rencontré un … mais c’était sur le petit marché de souvenirs à l’entrée de la forteresse.
In this small village with cobblestone streets from the Incas period, flow multitudes of small streams descending from the mountain and passing under the houses. A well-preserved Inca fortress stands in front of Plaza del Armas. Authentic little town where you could almost meet an Inca before the arrival of the Spaniards. Besides we met one ... but it was in the small souvenir market at the entrance of the fortress. 

Les habitations et les rues sont construites sur et à partir des ruines de l'ancien village Maya.
The houses and streets are built on and from the ruins of the ancient Mayan village.

Les habitants du village sont restés très authentiques et même les pots de fleurs sont "Mayas".
The inhabitants of the village have remained very authentic and even the flower pots are "Mayas".

Une arrière cours qui rappelle beaucoup celle de papy et mamie Blanchard! Il y a quelques cochons d'Inde dans les cages...
A backyard that is reminiscent of grandpa and grandma Blanchard! There are some guinea pigs in the cages ...
