69/ Bolivia - La Paz

Du 22 au 27 Décembre 2017

After a huge bus journey, we got a taxi from the bus station to our accommodation, a small but cosy hotel, called Rendez-vous, which cost higher than we would normally pay for accommodation but we thought we would splash out a bit since we would be here for Christmas. It had a big comfortable bed, guaranteed hot water and decent internet - the essentials!
After a late lunch at vegetarian resturant Maverick near by, we went back to relax in the room after a tiring bus journey, to catch up on some Netflix and get an early night.
Après un long trajet en bus, nous avons pris un taxi depuis la gare routière jusqu’à notre hébergement; un petit hôtel cosy appelé Rendez-vous qui coûtait plus cher que ce que nous avions l'habitude de payer mais c'est ici que nous allions passer Noël. Il y avait un grand lit confortable, de l'eau chaude garantie et un internet décent: l'essentiel donc! 

Après un déjeuner tardif au restaurant végétarien Maverick situé à proximité, nous sommes retournés nous détendre dans la chambre car ce voyage en bus avait été vraiment exténuant, pour nous mettre à jour sur quelques séries Netflix et nous coucher tôt.

After a big lie in and breakfast buffet in the hotel, we headed to Plaza Sucre to join a free walking tour. The meeting point was just outside San Pedro Prison, made famous by the book (recommended to me by Sav - good shout) Marching Powder. A great read if you like that sort of thing.
When we got to the park we looked for the guide who we were told would be waiting their in a red coat. However, after 30 minutes of waiting eventually he turned up after some mix up in the schedules between the guides. The tour took around 2.5 hrs and as always was a great way to get your bearings in a new city and learn some history, geography and politics about the country.
Après avoir largement profité du grand buffet pour le petit-déjeuner de l'hôtel, nous nous sommes dirigés vers la Plaza Sucre pour nous joindre à notre "traditionnelle" visite de la ville à pied avec l'un des Free Walking Tour. Le point de rencontre était juste à la sortie de la prison de San Pedro rendue célèbre par le livre 'Marching Powder' (recommandé par mon ami Sav... très bon conseil!). Une bonne lecture si vous aimez ce genre de littérature. 

Une fois arrivés dans le petit parc, nous avons cherché le guide qui devait nous y rejoindre et être reconnaissable grâce à une veste rouge. Il arrivera après 30 minutes d’attente au moment où nous allions repartir, sans doute un mélange dans les horaires entre les guides. Le tour de la vieille ville a duré environ deux heures et demie et comme toujours, c'était un excellent moyen de nous repérer dans cette nouvelle ville et d'apprendre son histoire, sa géographie et la situation politique du pays.

We decided to walk back to our hostel after the end of the tour and check out a few cinemas along the way to see if we could see the new Star Wars film. After no success with the first two we visted, the last one turned out to be really good and they were showing the movie in English with spanish subtitles the following day at midday. Also, beside the cinema, we found a good supermarket where we could do shopping to make our christmas dinner after the cinema - perfect.
We headed back to the hostel and later than evening we went to french restaurant La Comedie which turned out to be very good. We had a nice amount of wine and had wee merry heads on us when we were walking home!
Nous avons décidé de retourner à notre hôtel après la fin de la visite et de vérifier sur le chemin si l'un des cinémas projetait le nouveau Star Wars. Après deux premières réponses négatives, nous en avons trouvé un super bien qui en plus, proposait le film en VO avec des sous-titres espagnols le lendemain à midi. Autre bonne nouvelle, à côté du cinéma, se trouvait un supermarché assez complet où nous pourrions faire les courses pour la préparation de notre dîner de Noël après le cinéma: Parfait!
Nous sommes ensuite retournés dans notre petite chambre cosy et plus tard, nous nous sommes offerts un restaurant français, La Comédie, qui s'est avéré être vraiment très bon. En plus d'y avoir bien mangé, nous y avons bu du bon vin en quantité suffisante pour rentrer vraiment très joyeux.

The following day was christmas eve and after a late breakfast we headed to the cinema to watch Star Wars. We were there about 30 mins early and we were the first ones in. Then 5 mins before it was due to start we were still the only ones in the theatre and we were starting to think we would have the whole place to ourselves. Finally just before the advertisements ended a few more arrived but in the end up there were still only 6 of us in total in the theatre!
After this we went to do our christmas dinner shopping and decided we would make beef bourguignon - not a traditional christmas dinner for either of us but one that we both like and we could find good ingredients for.
Le lendemain c'était le réveillon de Noël; après un nouveau petit déjeuner tardif nous sommes allés au cinéma pour voir Star Wars. Nous étions là 30 minutes en avance et étions donc les premiers. Mais 5 minutes avant le début du film, nous étions toujours les seuls dans la salle et commencions à nous dire que nous allions avoir une séance privatisée. Mais juste avant la fin des publicités, quelques personnes sont finalement arrivées et nous avons fini a 6. Pas mal pour un Star Wars! 

Après la séance, nous sommes allés faire nos achats pour le dîner de Noël avec au menu: du bœuf bourguignon. Pas franchement le dîner de Noël traditionnel ni pour l'un, ni pour l'autre, mais un dîner que nous aimons tous les deux et pour lequel nous pouvions trouver les bons ingrédients.

When we got back to the hostel, there were two other couples making their christmas dinner, a Swedish and an Aussie/NZ couple. We discussed our various dishes and traditions for Christmas in our respective countries and agreed to divide up the time in the small kitchen so we would not get in each other's way! We prepared our beef bourguignon and left it to cook for 6 hours or so. Around 17h we got started on the apero. We had bought a couple of decent beers in the shop to try and then moved onto the champagne and foie gras which Elodie's parents had brought with them from France! We broke open the red wine and called home, especially to Elodie's family as Christmas eve is more important to them and her uncle Bernard was in hospital for it, whereas for us it is christmas day. Around 9pm and a little bit tipsy, we stuck on the spuds and had the beef bourguignon - the beef was a little bit tough as the quality of the meat wasn't the best but it was the best we could get in Bolivia! Then off to bed with an episode of The Americans.
À notre retour à l’hôtel, deux autres couples préparaient déjà leur repas de Noël, un couple de suédois et un couple australien/néo-zélandais. Nous avons discuté de nos différents plats et traditions pour Noël dans nos pays respectifs et avons convenu de nous répartir le temps et l'espace de la petite cuisine afin de ne pas nous gêner! Nous avons préparé notre bœuf bourguignon et l'avons laissé cuire environ 6 heures. Nous avons commencé l’apéro vers 17h. Nous avions acheté quelques bonnes bières dans le supermarché pour tester puis nous sommes passés au champagne et au foie gras que les parents d'Elodie avaient ramenés de France! Nous avons ouvert le vin rouge et appelé chez nous, d'abord chez Elodie car en France le réveillon de Noël est très important et surtout car son oncle Bernard était à l'hôpital. En Irlande, nous célébrons plus le jour de Noël. Vers 21h et un peu éméchés, nous avons lancé les patates puis avons dégusté le bœuf bourguignon (le bœuf était un peu dur car la qualité de la viande n'était pas très bonne mais c'était la meilleure que nous puissions trouver ici!

Christmas Dinner / Dîner de Noël

On Christmas day, unfortuntely, we must have been bold during our sabbatical year because Santa didn't leave any presents so we had nothing to open in the morning - sniff sniff. However, it was a very relaxed day, doing not very much except eating, calling family and watching films.
We were looking forward to the evening however, because we had booked a highly rated Swiss fondue restaurant. Unfortunately, when we arrived it was closed! So we had to make do with a very average lebanese restaurant which was the only place open that we could find.
So onto boxing day and after breakfast in the hotel we headed down the town centre to get a mini bus to Valle De la Luna (Moon Valley) which we had heard was a cool enough place to go to. Decide for yourself with the following photos.
Le jour de Noël, malheureusement, nous n'avons pas dû être assez sages durant cette année sabbatique, car le Père Noël ne nous a apporté aucun cadeau, nous n'avons donc rien eu à ouvrir le matin... sniff sniff. Ce fut toutefois une belle journée de détente pendant laquelle nous fîmes peu de choses excepté manger, téléphoner à nos familles et regarder des films. 
Nous attendions avec impatience la soirée, car nous avions réservé un restaurant de fondue suisse hautement recommandé. Malheureusement, quand nous sommes arrivés devant, c'était fermé! Nous avons donc dû nous contenter d'un restaurant libanais très moyen qui était le seul endroit ouvert le soir de Noël. 
Le lendemain après le petit-déjeuner, nous sommes allés dans le centre pour prendre un minibus à destination de la Valle De la Luna (vallée de la lune). Je vous laisse vous faire une idée de cet endroit à travers les photos suivantes.

Afterwards we got a taxi to the nearest Teleferica stop. Like most of the big cities in the Andes they have a cable car system here, and for me it is a massive novelty still to get on it because I don't think there is a single one in Ireland! It is a great way to get cool views of the city and also see other parts of the city which might be 'dodgy' but you can see it from the safety of the sky! 

Ensuite, nous avons pris un taxi jusqu'à l'arrêt de téléphérique (Teleferica) le plus proche. Comme la plupart des grandes villes situées dans les Andes, La Paz possède un réseau de téléphériques en pleine expansion, mais pour moi, cela reste encore quelque chose de nouveau car je ne pense pas qu'il y en est un seul en Irlande! C’est aussi un excellent moyen d’obtenir une vue imprenable sur la ville et d'apercevoir certains quartiers qui pourraient être trop dangereux pour une visite à pied: la sécurité du ciel!

After a wee snack on the left over foie gras and camembert followed by a little siesta, we headed to the suisse fondue restaurant which was open now. Luckily it was very good and lived up to the reputation so we were glad to get to it eat there as we were leaving the next morning for Cochabamba!
Après un petit en-cas composé de restes de foie gras et de camembert suivi d'une petite sieste, nous sommes retournés au restaurant suisse qui cette fois était ouvert. C'était très bon et à la hauteur de sa réputation; un dernier repas parfait à La Paz avant de nous aventurer dans le reste du pays. Départ le lendemain matin pour Cochabamba!
